Critical Analysis:

Originally published in 1960, Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham remains popular with children today, nearly half a century later. Its enduring popularity is due not only to the style of writing used but also to the simple, colorful illustrations. The rhyme and rhythm of the storyline, evident in phrases such as “I do not like them, Sam-I-am. I do not like green eggs and ham.” (page 12), gives the book a musical quality which begs to be read aloud. The story starts with a basic question, “Do you like green eggs and ham?” (page 8) and builds on it. Dr. Seuss (aka Theodor Geisel) adds simple, silly phrases and repeats them as the story continues. This repetition allows children the opportunity to hear and play with the words as well as to participate in the story by repeating familiar lines.

Geisel’s illustrations add to the fun of the book as well. Instead of drawing realistic characters, he creates a brightly colored world where trees and grass can be blue, yellow, or red; and imaginary creatures are capable of driving up trees and onto moving trains. Although many children have been pestered to try new foods, they will laugh at the escapades of Sam-I-Am as he tries to persuade his friend to try green eggs and ham. The action-packed drawings and playful text encourage children to participate in this high-energy adventure with Sam-I-Am. Thus, another generation of children is destined to fall in love with Dr. Seuss and learn that reading can be fun.
