Review:
“Wolf to Woof,” “UFO Mystery,” and “Orangutan Rescue” – what do these titles have in common? Each is a featured article in the March issue of National Geographic Kids, a magazine which invites children between the ages of 6 and 14 to “dare to explore” the world they live in. This award winning magazine is published by the National Geographic Society, and like its parent magazine, features many wonderful color photographs of animals, nature, and the world in general. In addition to four or five feature articles, each issue contains regular columns, such as “Weird But True,” outrageous facts about a variety of topics; “Guinness World Records,” information from this popular book; “Video Game Central,” tips and insights about various games; and “What in the World?,” a section asking readers to identify items shown from different perspectives. National Geographic Kids is designed to grab the attention of children who have grown up in an electronic, face-paced world. Each page is laid out with bold titles and captions and short “sound bytes” of information presented on brightly colored backgrounds. Feature articles are only 1 to 2 pages in length with the main focus on the pictures and a few basic, but interesting facts. The magazine includes a table of contents, but readers will want to peruse the whole issue to discover what new and fascinating information is presented each month. Even nonreaders will be drawn to the publication and will enjoy flipping through the issue and reading those sections which interest them most. In addition, the magazine encourages readers to try their hand at “Funny Fill-Ins”, the highlighted crafts and activities, and drawing. National Geographic Kids entertains and educates children, encouraging them to explore the world around them. For those who can’t wait for the next issue, the magazine invites them to visit kids.nationalgeographic.com for additional information, videos and games.
